It’s time for the weed report! New legislation in Washington State aims to diversify marijuana industry! HB 2870 went into effect 6/11/20. The State commission on African American affairs using statistics from the LCB estimated that 1% of cannabis production and processing licenses have been issued to African Americans and only 3% of the states marijuana retail licenses. The new legislation will create a social equity program which will allow the Washington State Cannabis board to grant forfeited, cancelled, revoked or otherwise un-issued marijuana business licensed to qualified equity applicants. To qualify for the new program, an applicant must be from a “disproportionately impacted area,” defined as a census tract that has high poverty and unemployment rates, a high rate of participation in income-based government programs and high rates of arrest or punishment of cannabis-related crimes. The applicant must also submit a “social equity plan” showing how their business would help achieve equity-related goals. To learn more read this article from Marijuana Moment  or view the legislation
