SCC Medical Update

Hi from Molly with a quick update on the medical training.

I am proud to say I have completed my training and will be recognized as a certified Medical Marijuana Consultant by the State of Washington.  This means that I will be able to serve patients starting July 1.  The rest of our staff will begin certification requirements in shifts over the next month.

The course is thorough and eye opening.  I have been at Sea Change since we opened nearly 2 years ago and have had plenty of exposure to many customers describing their medical issues in our recreational setting so I thought I was already a fan of medical cannabis.  I’ve been provided with the ample current research and knowledge I didn’t know I needed.  My mind has been completely blown, I was not expecting to be more inspired, more compassionate, more convinced of the righteousness of medical cannabis.

My takeaway after the 20 hour class is this:  Our bodies are riddled with the endocannabinoid system, it regulates numerous functions.  This is why cannabis can be (anecdotally) effective for many different conditions.  Our bodies produce cannabinoids naturally, the ones that come from plants work with receptors in a similar way without the side effects often observed in pharmaceuticals (think of that long list the narrator quickly rattles off when you hear a drug commercial.)

For now the list of qualifying conditions approved by the state is brief but with the relative safety of cannabis (no lethal dose unless you can consume 1/3 your body weight of weed in 10 minutes) and anecdotal information you can find online (such as high CBN percentage being good for sleep or items high in CBG have been said to help with headaches), customers now have the ability to research and dial in their usage to achieve desired results.

The list of qualifying conditions allowed medical cannabis in the State of Washington include:

• Nausea, vomiting, and cachexia associated with cancer, HIV-positive status, AIDS, hepatitis C, anorexia, and their treatments;

• Severe muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and other seizure and spasticity disorders;

• Acute or chronic glaucoma;

• Crohn’s disease; and

• Some forms of intractable pain.
